Native to the Southern Mediterranean, Rosemary is now cultivated all over the world. The botanical name Rosmarinus officinalis means ‘Dew of the sea’ as it initially bloomed around the Mediterranean’s shores. It’s part of the large Lamiaceae botanical family and has been used as a medicinal, sacred and culinary herb for centuries. Traces of Rosemary have been found in Egyptian tombs and it was burnt or placed around doors by the ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off evil spirits. During the 1600s, it was used in concoctions by physicians who believed it would prevent the plague. In Western herbal medicine, it was burnt in sick rooms to purify the air.
